NECHAMA - Jewish Response to Disaster
In the spring of 2018, I had the opportunity to go on an alternative spring break trip to Houston. I jumped on this chance to be able to spend my spring break serving people who were devastated by Hurricane Harvey in 2017.
Fifteen of the Regis community, eight students and seven faculty members, spent one week putting up drywall, sanitizing beams, cleaning up, and most importantly, listening to the stories of those who were still recovering from the hurricane, even though the rest of the world moved on.

In 2015 and on to 2016, my church was looking for volunteers to help with a new program they wanted to try out. The church had been providing a class titled "DivorceCare" for adults who were struggling because they had just gone through a divorce. During that time, we offered regular childcare for their kids.
They decided to change that and began offering classes to the kids as well. I decided to volunteer. I was able to teach the kids and lead them in activities. I played with them, talked to them, and listened to them. I learned so much from the kids as well as from the program itself. This was truly an eye-opening experience.

In the spring of 2016, I had the opportunity to go on an alternative spring break trip to Florida with Habitat for Humanity. While in Florida, my group of eight students and one faculty member worked on five different houses, each at different stages. We painted, learned how to use power tools, caulked, and cleaned, and most importantly, connected with the staff, the new homeowners, and the volunteers.
